Chapter 18

Wolf

The days leading up to Midtane are a blur. When I’m not on Sabine’s bodyguard duty, I’m in the Golden Sentinels’ camp, running training drills under Captain Fernsby’s relentless command. Since returning from the border, Rian has had every able-bodied man in Duren brushing up on their sword skills.

Meanwhile, the servants run themselves ragged preparing for the grandest Midtane celebration in decades. Most years, it’s a simple affair. A white tent raised in Tolver Wood. A fiddler. Fruit platters. Everyone getting drunk in white tunics and splashing in the hot springs, half-naked like bitches in heat. This year? Rian is spending a king’s ransom to impress the heads of Astagnon’s most powerful houses. He’ll buy their support with fine wine. Blackmail or bribe if he must. Or, simply put the fear of war in them with talk of waking gods.

During all of it, Sabine spends long hours in the monoceros stable with Myst and the creature. If not there, then she’s pouring over ancient books in the Valvere library, mumbling to herself the rare names she finds amid the pages. Fuck if I know why, but I trust she has her reasons.

She barely acknowledges me unless it’s to loudly complain about how I smell like sweaty barracks. I’m no idiot. I told her to do everything in her power to throw Rian off his suspicions, and she’s doing it brilliantly. Frankly, a little too well. Anyone watching would think she loathes me more than the plague.

I’ll take her insults, though. I’d bear the worst pox just to bask in the fringes of her light. Finally, there are no more secrets between us. I harbor no illusions of gaining her forgiveness, but at least I don’t have to keep pretending as though she meant nothing to me. Not when every moment without her is like an echo I’ll forever be chasing.

Because she still can’t be mine.

Technically, the truth about her parentage doesn’t change anything. She’s still engaged to Rian. She still needs his army. The threat from King Rachillon hasn’t decreased—if anything, it’s swelled tenfold. We have no more chance of being together now than we ever did.

And yet, everything has changed.

Because Sabine doesn’t hate me—she only hates what I did. Worlds lie in that small difference. It’s the thin, fragile thread in a tapestry that holds together the possibility of redemption for my cursed soul.
